The identity of an individual can serve as the singular key that unlocks a multitude of services that are delivered through today’s interconnected online and physical worlds. Beginning with an ID credential issued by a trusted authority – like a state driver’s license or other government issued ID card – the ability to securely authenticate a person’s identity is a necessary condition to providing safe and secure access to data, services, and physical facilities.
Identity and Access Management (IAM) is the organizing discipline that creates the foundation upon which organizations and governments offer value-added services to their customers and constituents. “Be it a financial transaction, the exchange of information, or access to sensitive data, IAM functions as the control gateway for the flow of personal information to authorized individuals,” begins Kirk Brafford, General Manager and Program Director for Identity Solutions at IDEMIA.
There are a number of innovative technologies that support IAM and that “augment” historical ways of authenticating a person’s identity:
• In addition to traditional ID credentials issued by trusted third-parties, biometric technologies using fingerprints and facial recognition can also be used to provide additional authentication “factors” to prove a person’s identity with a higher degree of confidence.
• New ID card technologies, incorporating anti-fraud security features and microprocessor chips (smart cards), coupled with extensive identity vetting processes, have produced a new generation of secure ID cards, like REAL ID and the Personal Identity Verification Card (PIV) used by the federal government, to securely and electronically verify that a person is who they claim to be.
At IDEMIA, Brafford and team develop identity and access management solutions that combine the physical characteristics and digital credentials of individuals to facilitate secure access to services in both the online and physical worlds. With an extensive portfolio of technology solutions focused on credential issuance, vetting and security, IDEMIA is unique in being able to offer its customers customized solutions that fit a wide variety of use cases in all types of environments where strong identity verification is of upmost importance in enforcing IT and physical security, and protecting privacy.
IDEMIA’s identity credential and biometric offering hosts a plethora of solutions for facial recognition, fingerprint and palm print, electronic IDs, e-SIM management, video identification and analytics, smart cards, contactless payments, and digital banking. “IDEMIA ensures that individuals can assert their identities through the harmonization of physical and digital credentials,” states Roland Fournier, Senior Director of Civil Identity Product Management at IDEMIA. Such diversity, backed by a trail of excellence in the IAM space allows IDEMIA to cater to a vast marketplace that includes finance, IoT, public security, and more. Sufficing the needs of such an extensive marketplace consequently builds a digital ecosystem for identity verification that was previously unheard of.
As the world transcends into a service economy from an ownership economy, the need to diversify from a verification model involving paper-based physical documentation to an online ecosystem with digital modes of data verification is imperative. IDEMIA addresses this necessity by crafting identity solutions based on a variety of use cases through an array of multifactor authentication technologies and security services.
Mobile ID, the mobile identity solution built on such use cases , aims to add a digital layer on top of the conventional ID cards used by citizens, including state-issue driver’s licenses. As a state sponsored ID, it helps people validate their identity with their driver’s license on their phone. Applications can include accessing financial accounts, logging into web sites and mobile applications, checking into a hotel, proving one’s age, accessing government privileges, and picking up prescriptions. Once accepted by an online provider, Mobile ID can eliminate the burden and danger of passwords by employing mobile devices as the go-to authenticator, and safeguarding the mobile ID on each user’s smart device without storing that information in the cloud.
Mobile ID incorporates IDEMIA’s idFabric™ gateway that provides registration and verification for Mobile ID, and also empowers Identity Proofing and Verification (IPV) services used for one-time or regulated identity checks, as well as registration in a state sponsored Mobile ID. IPV is made available to third-party service providers and government/federal organizations via a secure API gateway. idFabric™ validates the identity of an individual by checking the authenticity of the physical state-issued driver’s license, and matches the biographical data in the 2D barcode and the user’s selfie against the agency’s System of Record. This creates a digital identity for a participating individual that is kept secure and up to date on the user’s device built on a key root-of-trust for identity in the US: the DMV. Attribute signatures can be verified by relying parties using cryptographic methods to ensure the digital information is original and official from the corresponding issuer.
“Mobile ID is a game-changer as it delivers secure identity-on-the-edge capabilities giving users total control over their personal information during online and in-person transactions,” informs Darrell Geusz, Senior Director of Digital Identity Product Management at IDEMIA.
It is easy to see how these mobile, digital identities will surely be a hub to integrate with IDEMIA’s other digital transformation product lines to deliver unique personalized and VIP user experiences without jeopardizing the user’s privacy and personal information.
For the past two decades, IDEMIA has also been the market leader in biometric technology for use in access control and time & attendance applications. IDEMIA’s technology has been proven across the globe in almost every conceivable industry ranging from some of the harshest environments such as mining and construction, to the world’s most advanced and sterile manufacturing sites.

Physical security is a key component in any organization’s overall security plan. Malicious attacks can occur through cyber and/or physical penetration of an organization’s defenses. More companies than ever before are now by default turning to biometrics for physical security. This is driven by the realization that traditional card or PIN based systems do not positively identify the actual person entering the facility, rather it is only the card or PIN that is being checked, and cards and PINs can be easily stolen, which is a major vulnerability.
No matter the industry, every company has a responsibility to protect their workplace, their IP and their employees from threats that could arise as a result of unauthorized access.
IDEMIA specializes in developing technology that not only handles the wide variety of environments and use-cases in which secure access needs to be provided, but also to handle the very highest throughput demands of the world’s largest organizations.
It is in the area of speed and throughput that IDEMIA’s recent efforts have really transformed physical security technology. In 2015, IDEMIA launched its first version of MorphoWave™ frictionless biometric technology for the access control market. This groundbreaking technology is able to scan fingerprints in 3D with a simple wave of the hand. Users do not need to pause or stop and can simply keep walking (or even driving) as they are positively identified on the move.
MorphoWave™ has become the benchmark for frictionless access control in the security industry, explains Gary Jones, VP of Global Channel and Marketing, Biometric Access &Time Solutions at IDEMIA.
MorphoWave™ technology has won worldwide acclaim taking top honors in major international product awards, and has been heavily adopted across the globe in recent years. The technology’s amazing throughput in excess of 45 people per minute means that large organizations gain massive productivity efficiencies, while achieving even higher levels of security than with traditional biometric systems.
Last year IDEMIA launched the MorphoWave™ Compact, the latest addition to the product line-up designed to achieve the goal of “frictionless access everywhere” due to the dramatically reduced price point, compact form factor and IP65 weather rating allowing for outdoor use. IDEMIA is seeing the technology used extensively with incredible success.
Another piece of technology that serves as a testament to IDEMIA’s competency in the identity ecosystem is its 3D Face Recognition module that enhances the accuracy of biometric authentication by combining speed with robustness. The solution analyzes the geometry of a face through 3D authentication sensors to compare with an existing user identity database for rapid biometric validation. IDEMIA enables OEMs to integrate this technology with their existing solution sets to authenticate user identification instantly. One such OEM—Samsung— implemented IDEMIA’s 3D Face Recognition technology with their SDS FIDO solution. James Choi, VP of Mobile Payment Business at Samsung SDS, reflects upon the collaboration by saying, “As a result of the integration of IDEMIA's technology, the Samsung FIDO solution—previously available with fingerprint capability—is now enhanced with face authentication. By adding face recognition technology, we will be able to deliver better value to our enterprise customers and accelerate market penetration.”
"I’ve seen that the security of customer and organizational information has grown to be of paramount importance. It is no more just the decision of the CTO, CISO or CIO but rather is driven at the CEO and Board level to embrace a security-oriented mindset throughout the enterprise"
Upholding Security Above All
IDEMIA’s solutions create a secure environment to support a variety of use cases and ensure that an organization’s cybersecurity objectives are met, with a focus on protecting individual privacy and confidentiality. “Having worked in the IAM market for a while, I have observed that it is hard for enterprises to be convinced of the need to adopt effective security solutions unless they have experienced cyberattacks previously. However, with the large number of hacks and intrusions experienced by major companies over the past decade, I’ve seen that the security of customer and organizational information has grown to be of paramount importance. It is no more just the decision of the CTO, CISO or CIO but rather is driven at the CEO and Board level to embrace a security-oriented mindset throughout the enterprise,” elaborates Brafford. Such decision-making is now based on managing the risk of potential financial loss and reputational damage in the face of persistent cyberattacks. A resilient security infrastructure incorporating IAM solutions and technologies is now mandatory for any organization trying to deal with the threat of cyberattacks and identity theft.
"IDEMIA ensures that individuals can assert their identities through the harmonization of physical and digital credentials"
Brafford says that the widespread adoption of security technology for most use cases hinges upon improving end-user convenience; people will willingly tradeoff some of their identity information if it ultimately leads to a convenience benefit. For example, at an airport, travelers need to wait in line, produce their boarding pass, and validate identity documents to gain access to airline services. To improve user convenience and speed throughput in this situation, facial recognition technology has emerged as the go-to solution that eliminates paper-based documentation to provide value-added benefits to users and speed passengers through the airport. “Users will opt to benefit from identity authentication technologies as a tradeoff to sharing their personal identification data with a service provider. In one application of this principle, users can secure their smart devices with their biometrics to strongly authenticate their identity and enforce their access rights to sensitive data or the ability to engage in high value transactions. This is where IAM technologies merge with convenience to improve security and drive user adoption,” substantiates Brafford.
Leading the Digital Identity Evolution
IDEMIA, through its IAM solutions, can serve as the bridge to enable organizations to migrate from legacy to a modern digital infrastructure. As an example, IDEMIA worked with the federal government to move from insecure visual ID badges for employees and contractors to smart card based identity cards that use public key infrastructure (PKI) to provide high assurance identity authentication for access control to government networks and buildings. We are now offering the same capabilities on mobile devices in addition to traditional ID cards. In other markets, IDEMIA is a leader in assisting organizations to transition to a digital ecosystem for a multitude of applications; for instance, helping state DMVs to digitize drivers’ licenses, and providing digital IDs that can be used on mobile devices to securely access services.
A safer, more streamlined identification
Given the vast range of environments and usages, securing our identity has become mission critical in the world we live in today.
