The identity of an individual can serve as the singular key that unlocks a multitude of services that are delivered through today’s interconnected online and physical worlds. Digitizing Identities

Mobile ID, the mobile identity solution built on such use cases , aims to add a digital layer on top of the conventional ID cards used by citizens, including state-issue driver’s licenses. As a state sponsored ID, it helps people validate their identity with their driver’s license on their phone. Applications can include accessing financial accounts, logging into web sites and mobile applications, checking into a hotel, proving one’s age, accessing government privileges, and picking up prescriptions. Once accepted by an online provider, Mobile ID can eliminate the burden and danger of passwords by employing mobile devices as the go-to authenticator, and safeguarding the mobile ID on each user’s smart device without storing that information in the cloud.

Mobile ID incorporates IDEMIA’s idFabric™ gateway that provides registration and verification for Mobile ID, and also empowers Identity Proofing and Verification (IPV) services used for one-time or regulated identity checks, as well as registration in a state sponsored Mobile ID. IPV is made available to third-party service providers and government/federal organizations via a secure API gateway. idFabric™ validates the identity of an individual by checking the authenticity of the physical state-issued driver’s license, and matches the biographical data in the 2D barcode and the user’s selfie against the agency’s System of Record. This creates a digital identity for a participating individual that is kept secure and up to date on the user’s device built on a key root-of-trust for identity in the US: the DMV. Attribute signatures can be verified by relying parties using cryptographic methods to ensure the digital information is original and official from the corresponding issuer.

Brafford says that the widespread adoption of security technology for most use cases hinges upon improving end-user convenience; people will willingly tradeoff some of their identity information if it ultimately leads to a convenience benefit. For example, at an airport, travelers need to wait in line, produce their boarding pass, and validate identity documents to gain access to airline services. To improve user convenience and speed throughput in this situation, facial recognition technology has emerged as the go-to solution that eliminates paper-based documentation to provide value-added benefits to users and speed passengers through the airport. “Users will opt to benefit from identity authentication technologies as a tradeoff to sharing their personal identification data with a service provider. In one application of this principle, users can secure their smart devices with their biometrics to strongly authenticate their identity and enforce their access rights to sensitive data or the ability to engage in high value transactions. This is where IAM technologies merge with convenience to improve security and drive user adoption,” substantiates Brafford.
